Activity 3: Analysis of Letter by Michelle Dapito (01)

For logos, the writer made his claim, which is for the politicians to support the gun control legislation that will be on the November ballot, so that it will not be easy for common citizens to buy a gun. He also backed up his claim by stating examples and evidences found by reliable people, example, the F.B.I.

For ethos, his first sentence like “I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state.” makes him a likable person to the politicians. Also, because he is a parent of a person who died because of an accidental gunshot, it makes him a trustworthy and credible person, which makes claim more convincing.

For pathos, his word choice and examples were appealing to the emotions, values & beliefs of the audience. His evidences were well-written, and very convincing, supporting his claim very well. Sentences like “However research has shown that a gun kept in the home is 43 times more likely to kill a member of the household, or friend, than an intruder.” convinces the reader a lot as it shows a scary side to it, making the audience be in his favour.
